The idea of a sequel was first teased in the original film, with Yogurt telling Lone Starr, "God willing, we'll all meet again in Spaceballs II: The Search for More Money."[5]

In a 2013 interview, Rick Moranis said that he and Mel Brooks had discussed a potential sequel, with him pitching the title Spaceballs III: The Search for Spaceballs II. However, he and Brooks were unable to structure a deal.[6] In February 2015, Brooks said that he would like to make a sequel to be released after the next Star Wars film and hoped that Moranis would reprise his role. This proposed film, Brooks said, may be called Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money.[7] However, in February 2020, Bill Pullman, the actor of Lone Starr said during an interview with Daily Blast Live, "It's up to Mel. Ask him if he has too much money and that's why he doesn't do it."[8]

Production on a sequel was reported in June 2024, with Josh Greenbaum set to direct the film from a screenplay by Josh Gad, Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit. Also, in that same month, it was confirmed that Gad star in the film.[2] By November 2024, the script's first draft was completed, and Gad said that "everybody who's read it [the script] has been blown away".[9]

In June 12, 2025, an announcement video with Brooks was released, teasing the return of Dark Helmet.[10] The same day, several cast members were reported to be reprising their roles from the original film: Mel Brooks,[1] Bill Pullman, Rick Moranis,[3] and Daphne Zuniga. It was also reported that Lewis Pullman[4] and Keke Palmer would also star in the film.[3]
