King Roland

King Roland is the king of the Planet Druidia and father of Princess Vespa. He loves her dearly, and spoils her rotten with such possessions as fancy dresses, matched luggage, and a Mercedes cruiser. He was played by the late Dick Van Patten in Spaceballs.

In the movie

King Roland is first seen attending the wedding of Princess Vespa and the lethargic (hence his name) Prince Valium. Vespa begs her father not to make her marry him. Roland reminds her that Valium's the last prince in the galaxy. She unshockingly gets cold feet and storms off in her luxury starship.

Some time afterward, Roland receives a phone call from Vespa. Dark Helmet of Planet Spaceball has decided to pursue her, and she needs someone to save her from getting captured by Spaceball I. Roland then calls up the Eagle 5, and makes an offer with Lone Starr and Barf to rescue her for 1,000,000 spacebucks.

Lone Starr's and Barf's success in helping Vespa avoid Dark Helmet's grasp proves short-lived, as Helmet tricks her into falling into his grasp by disguising as King Roland. Helmet demands that Roland give him the code to Druidia's air shield, or else he will have Vespa undergo a nose job that would undo the one she received for her 16th birthday. Roland gives in, and divulges the code: 1-2-3-4-5.

After Spaceball I opens the air shield, it transforms into Mega Maid and begins sucking the air of Druidia up into a giant vacuum cleaner. King Roland grabs a picture of Vespa, and says goodbye to his daughter right before he stops breathing. However, Lone Starr foils the plan as he uses The Schwartz to switch Mega Maid's vacuum from "suck" to "blow", blowing all the air back onto the planet. Roland rejoices over the return of the air.

After Lone Starr returns Princess Vespa to King Roland, he turns down the 1,000,000 spacebucks, as an expression of his love for her. He asks Roland not to tell Vespa that he did this. However, during "Take Two" of Vespa's and Vallium's wedding, he can't resist the urge to tell her. This deed makes Vespa realize that she would rather marry Lone Starr than Vallium.

Miraculously, Lone Starr storms into the chapel, claiming himself as a prince. He asks Vespa if she would like to marry him, and she accepts. King Roland watches as his daughter blissfully weds a prince whom she loves.
